The Tranquil Summary
A design pilgrimage in the remote Graubunden village of Vals, at the head of an alpine valley. The hotel is attached to the 7132 Thermal Baths that Peter Zumthor built in 1996 from 60,000 slabs of local quartzite, and its rooms come in two styles: larger contemporary suites, or the compact House of Architects rooms by Zumthor, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Thom Mayne.
Best for
Architecture and design travellers, and anyone who wants unhurried access to one of the world's great thermal baths. Best for couples and solo travellers happy to spend a day or two moving between the water, the mountains and a two-Michelin-star table.
Consider if
Vals is a working farming village at the end of a long mountain road, not a resort, so there is little to do beyond the baths, walking and eating, and the last stretch of the journey is slow. The baths are open to day visitors as well; the calm hours are early and late, which hotel guests can use.
Why it's Tranquil
The village sits alone at around 1,250 metres, ringed by steep pasture and peaks, with one road in and few people about once the day trippers leave. The Zumthor baths are a dim, stone-heavy space built for slow, near-silent bathing, and staying in the hotel means using them outside public hours. The House of Architects rooms are quiet, tactile studies in oak, stone and stucco, and the mountain quiet outside is complete.
