The Tranquil Summary
An Aman onsen retreat in the wooded hills of Ise-Shima National Park, looking down over the still, pearl-farming waters of Ago Bay. Twenty-four suites and eight villas by Kerry Hill, in a pared-back modern take on the Japanese ryokan, each suite with its own hot-spring bath.
Best for
A slow, bathing-led stay in Japan, on its own or paired with the Ise Grand Shrine and the Shima coast. Suited to couples and families who want quiet, onsen and space rather than city sightseeing.
Consider if
It is remote for Japan, roughly two hours from Nagoya, so it works best as a two or three-night pause rather than a quick stop. This is a contemporary resort reading of the ryokan, not a historic inn, and the minimal design and hushed mood will feel austere to some.
Why it's Tranquil
The resort is spread thinly across a forested hillside inside a national park, with wide views over the calm, island-dotted bay and no development around it. Every suite has a private onsen fed by natural mineral water, and the 2,000-square-metre spa adds a large communal onsen, private bathing pavilions, a watsu pool and a glass-walled yoga studio over the trees. The Kerry Hill buildings are low, dark-timbered and quiet, and the pace is set by long soaks and slow meals.
