The Tranquil Summary

An &Beyond lodge of ten glass-walled suites in a private reserve of around 12,700 hectares on the edge of the Namib, near Sossusvlei. Each stone-and-glass suite has a plunge pool, a fireplace and a retractable skylight over the bed, and the lodge keeps a small observatory with a resident astronomer.

Best for

Couples and photographers drawn by desert landscape and some of the darkest night skies anywhere, usually as one leg of a wider Namibia trip. The all-inclusive rate covers nature drives, guided walks and e-bike rides on the reserve.

Consider if

This is a desert lodge rather than a Big Five safari, so the wildlife is sparse and understated: oryx, springbok, the occasional brown hyena, not herds. The great dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are a drive of over an hour each way, day and night temperatures swing sharply, and access is by light aircraft to the reserve airstrip.

Why it's Tranquil

The lodge has a reserve of its own many times larger than it needs, so there is no traffic, no fence in view and no sound but wind. The ten suites are set well apart along a low ridge, each facing open desert through a wall of glass, with a private plunge pool and a bed under a skylight you can open to the stars. Between drives there is a spa, a pool and a library, and the astronomer runs the observatory after dark, when the silence and the sky are the whole point.
