Tranquility Index

80 / 100

The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

Forty-four private pool villas built into a forty-five-degree jungle slope that drops into the Ayung River gorge at Payangan, north of Ubud. Completed in 2005 by around seven hundred local craftsmen, it is reached by funicular rather than paths, and its twin-tier infinity pool cantilevers out over the valley.

Best for

Anyone whose Bali bucket list starts with that pool, who wants villas deep in a jungle gorge.

Consider if

The site is a forty-five-degree slope worked entirely by funicular, so there is a lot of up and down, and the resort is older than most on this list.

Why it's Tranquil

Built into a forty-five-degree jungle slope falling to the Ayung River gorge at Payangan, north of Ubud. Forty-four private pool villas stepped down the gorge, screened by jungle and linked by funicular. The twin-tier infinity pool hangs right out over the valley. A spa on the hillside, and a private pool on every villa deck.
