Tranquility Index

80 / 100

The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

The northernmost resort on the Great Barrier Reef: 40 rooms, suites and villas on a granite island that is otherwise national park, ringed by 24 private beaches. All meals, drinks and non-motorised watersports are included, and the fringing reef is reachable straight from the sand.

Best for

Snorkellers and divers who want the reef at its best and a quiet, grown-up resort rather than a big one.

Consider if

Access is a one-hour flight from Cairns on a small aircraft, and the resort takes children aged 10 and over. It is a barefoot resort rather than an ultra-plush lodge, though prices sit firmly in lodge territory.

Why it's Tranquil

Just 40 rooms on a 1,013-hectare island that is a declared national park. Twenty-four beaches, most reachable only on foot or by dinghy, so a private stretch of sand is easy to find. All meals, drinks, and dinghies, kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear are included. Essentia Day Spa, an infinity pool, and some of the healthiest reef in the country a few fin-kicks offshore.
