The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

Ten rooms in a restored 1622 farm hamlet on a lonely hilltop above the Val d'Orcia. Vineyards and woodland on every side, a garden-to-table dinner each evening, and very little reason to leave.

Best for

Couples and solo travellers who want to disappear for a few days. Slow mornings, long lunches, local wine, a book by the pool, and views that do most of the work.

Consider if

Consider if you are travelling with children, as this is an adults-only retreat, or if you want a large spa, room service on demand, nightlife or a town within walking distance. The hilltop setting is remote, the nearest village is a drive away, and dinner is a single set four-course menu each evening.

Why it's Tranquil

Ten rooms are spread across a restored 1622 farm hamlet on a small hilltop between Montepulciano and Pienza, each with its own entrance and a private terrace or patch of garden. Vineyards, olive groves and woodland surround the site on every side, with no passing traffic and long views over the Val d'Orcia and its medieval villages. Wellness is deliberately low-key: a seasonal outdoor pool with a valley view, in-room massages by arrangement, a reading room, and the general quiet of the hill. Dinner is a four-course menu built from the estate's own organic garden, eaten at an unhurried pace.
