Tranquility Index

83 / 100

The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

An all-inclusive lodge for a maximum of 28 guests on a 28,000-hectare private property in the Queensland outback, in the shadow of a sandstone escarpment far larger than Uluru. Reached by helicopter or a half-day four-wheel drive from Cairns.

Best for

Travellers who want the outback to themselves: one small lodge, one enormous escarpment, and no other guests beyond the couple of dozen already there.

Consider if

Access is by light helicopter or a two-and-a-half to three-hour four-wheel drive from Cairns, both arranged in advance. Summer is hot; the lodge is quietest and coolest from around April to September.

Why it's Tranquil

A maximum of 28 guests at a time on a 28,000-hectare site, so the landscape is effectively private. The Mount Mulligan escarpment fills the western sky and turns red at sunset, best seen from the sunset bar. Three meals, drinks and one daily experience are included, along with an electric buggy per room. A firepit under dark skies, a pool, and a landscape with tens of thousands of years of Aboriginal history.
