A ryokan of more than 150 years in Kinosaki Onsen, a willow-lined hot-spring town on the San'in coast of northern Hyogo. Consider if
Kinosaki is a few hours by train from Kyoto or Osaka, and the ryokan runs to Japanese rhythms: an early kaiseki dinner, tatami and futon rather than beds, and set meal times. It sits on a town street rather than in open country, though the gardens and baths screen it well.
Why it's Tranquil
For all that it is in the middle of a town, the ryokan is built inward around still gardens, with rooms facing raked gravel, moss and maples rather than the street. The onsen town itself keeps a slow, car-light mood in the evenings, when guests move between the bathhouses on foot in wooden geta and yukata. Dinner is served privately in your room or a dining room, and the day ends in a quiet soak.
