Tranquility Index

88 / 100

The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

Around 100 tented villas set against the sandstone cliffs of the Ashar Valley in AlUla, north-west Saudi Arabia, on the edge of an ancient palm oasis and a short drive from the Nabataean tombs of Hegra. A sustainability-minded resort with a pool, the Thuraya wellness centre and a full programme of desert and cultural activities.

Best for

Travellers using AlUla as a base for Hegra, the old town and the canyon landscape, who want striking design, guided hikes, yoga and stargazing rather than a hotel they never leave. Good for couples and small groups.

Consider if

This is an experiential desert base more than a do-nothing retreat, and it is fairly large for a tented camp. AlUla is alcohol-free, as is the rest of Saudi Arabia, summer temperatures are extreme, and reaching it means a domestic flight to AlUla airport plus a transfer.

Why it's Tranquil

The villas are spread low along the base of a box canyon, screened by the sandstone walls and looking out over open desert and palm groves, with no through traffic and dark skies at night. The Thuraya wellness centre has treatment rooms, a yoga studio, a fitness area and an outdoor space for movement, using local roses, dates and clays. Days are built around guided hikes, cycling trails, celestial viewing with a local expert and quiet time by the pool.
