Tranquility Index

84 / 100

The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

Twenty-nine cedar-clad villas on a quiet hillside on Yakushima, the World Heritage island of ancient cedar forest off southern Kyushu, with the mountains behind and the sea in front. A spring-fed outdoor pool, a seaweed-based spa, and prix-fixe dinners built on island produce.

Best for

A restful base for hiking Yakushima's cedar forests and coast, with a serious kitchen and a pool to come back to. Suited to couples and solo travellers who want nature and calm over nightlife.

Consider if

Yakushima takes effort to reach, by plane or ferry from Kagoshima, and it is one of the wettest places in Japan, so plan for rain. The hotel is on a hillside a drive from the main trailheads and villages, and dinner is a set menu rather than a choice.

Why it's Tranquil

The villas are spread through low forest on the hill, each with a private deck and a long view over the trees to the Pacific, and the only sounds are wind and birds. The outdoor pool runs on mountain water and looks out to sea, the spa uses local seaweed and minerals, and there is a library lounge for the wet afternoons. Days out in the moss forests of Yakushima set the pace, and the hotel is built for coming back and doing very little.
