Tranquility Index

82 / 100

The Tranquility Index evaluates a hotel’s setting, seclusion and restorative offering based on our research. Firsthand stays may add additional verified insights.

The Tranquil Summary

The east-coast sibling of The Ranch Malibu, on 200 lakeside acres in Sloatsburg, about an hour north of New York City. Up to 25 guests a week follow a fixed programme of group hikes, strength and mobility classes, yoga, a daily massage and plant-based meals, with no phones on show and no menu to choose from.

Best for

A disciplined fitness and digital-detox reset within reach of New York. Suited to reasonably fit solo travellers and couples who want their days planned for them and are comfortable in a small group.

Consider if

The programme is fixed, physically demanding and sold only as a three or four-night package, with daily hikes of two to four hours and real elevation gain. There is no a la carte dining, no alcohol, little caffeine and almost no unstructured time, so it is not a spa holiday or a place to simply lounge.

Why it's Tranquil

The retreat sits on 200 wooded acres beside a lake next to Tuxedo Park, with hiking straight from the door and rooms kept free of televisions. Handing over control of the schedule, the food and screen time is the point, and it removes the small decisions that keep people wired. A daily massage and restorative yoga are built into every day, and the very small weekly group keeps the house quiet.
