A low, minimalist Ritz-Carlton on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, high in Nikko National Park beneath the cone of Mount Nantai. Ninety-four rooms with lake or mountain views and small Zen gardens, plus the brand's first natural hot spring, fed by milky sulphur water piped down from Yumoto Onsen.

Best for

A calm mountain-and-lake base for Nikko's shrines, waterfalls and hiking, with a proper onsen and spa to return to. Suited to couples and families who want nature and hot-spring bathing with full hotel service.

Consider if

It sits at altitude by the lake, around 40 minutes up a winding switchback road from the Nikko shrines and town, so a car or the hotel shuttle matters and winters are cold and snowy. It is a contemporary hotel rather than a traditional ryokan, and rates are high.

Why it's Tranquil

The building is kept low and quiet against the lake, with rooms facing either the water or Mount Nantai and each given its own small rock garden and engawa porch.
