The Tranquil Summary

A contemporary ryokan hidden in birch forest at Hanazono in Niseko, Hokkaido, with Mount Yotei filling the view. Fifteen freestanding villas, each around 100 square metres, and every one with its own indoor and open-air hot-spring bath fed by natural volcanic water.

Best for

A secluded winter or summer stay built around private onsen bathing and kaiseki, within reach of Niseko's slopes but well away from the resort bustle. Suited to couples and anyone wanting near-total privacy.

Consider if

It is a fair way from anywhere, about two hours from New Chitose Airport, and there is little to do on site beyond bathing, reading and eating, by design. Dinner is a fixed multi-course kaiseki at a set time, and the villa-only layout means you make your own company.

Why it's Tranquil

Each of the 15 villas stands alone in the trees, angled so the baths and living space look out at Mount Yotei or the forest and not at another villa. The private indoor and outdoor onsen mean you never share a bath or keep to opening hours, and the only shared rooms are a quiet library lounge and the dining room. Outside there is only birch woodland, meadow and mountain, and the name means, roughly, a grove in which to sit and forget.
